The Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Coin Series is back for a fifth year with the introduction of the 2018 One Ounce Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin. Beginning in 2014, this year has continued to gain popularity each year that a new coin is released. These coins are designed by retired 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Mercanti, combined with the high-quality production of the Perth Mint. The 2018 new coin design by Mercanti is available for purchase online now from Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Comes protected in a plastic case from the NGC!
  • The Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Series’ 5th year of release!
  • Contains One Troy ounce of .9999 fine silver.
  • The coin’s face value of $1 (AUD) is fully backed by the Australian government.
  • Receives a grading of Mint State-70 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.
  • The coin’s obverse features Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait.
  • A family of wedge tail eagles is shown on the reverse.

John Mercanti introduces a brand new, unique design with the 2018 One Ounce Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin. Mercanti’s signature is also shown on the coin, since he agreed to sign a limited number of labels for the NGC. For the past five years, Mercanti has designed each coin in the Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Series, and he is the first coin designer from America to be featured in a Perth Mint catalog.

The 2018 One Ounce Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin receives a grading of Mint State-70 (MS70) from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). Coins that receive an MS70 grading retain their original mint luster and have no visible flaws. Even when the 2018 One Ounce Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin is magnified, it shows no imperfections.

The obverse of the 2018 One Ounce Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin features the profile of Queen Elizabeth II. Her name is also engraved on the obverse, along with the face value of the coin and the nation of issue. Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998, and his IRB initials are featured near her bust.

On the reverse, the 2018 One Ounce Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin shows an eagle family, which is the fifth design that Mercanti has created. A female eagle is nesting and watching her newborn eaglet, while a male eagle flies overhead in the sky. The scene is truly majestic and honors Australia’s largest bird of prey.
