The term Britannia has a long history of use in describing the British Isles that dates back to the eras of the Greeks and Romans. Diodorus Siculus, a Greek explorer, first used the term Pretannia to describe a cluster of islands located off the north-west coast of mainland Europe. The people that inhabited this realm were known as the Pretani. This terminology persisted through the Roman Empire’s expansion into the region around the 1st century AD.

During the era of Roman expansion, the Romans referred to England as Albion and Ireland as Hibernia, eventually using the term Britannia to describe two of the four provinces created on the isles by the Romans.

Monarch of the United Kingdom since 1952, this is her fifth-generation image to appear on the coins of the United Kingdom. 1. Online Picture doesn’t do it justice. Buy 1 or buy 500, but seeing is believing. This is the most beautiful silver coin that I own. Contrast of geometric background patterns and polished image really make it pop. I also like the rim style. 2018 Britannia really looks sharp.
