Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins debuted from the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988. They weren’t the first, nor would they be the last Canadian Maple Leaf coins to feature from the RCM. The series launched as a whole in 1979 with the introduction of the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf, the world’s second-ever modern bullion coin.
When the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf arrived, it was instantly unique among other 1 oz silver bullion coins in that it featured .9999 fine silver content at a time when all others featured .999 fine silver. Today it remains one of a handful of silver coins with such high purity. In recent years, the RCM has also introduced a Platinum Canadian Maple Leaf and Palladium Canadian Maple Leaf coin.
On the obverse of all 2018 Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins you’ll find the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In this fourth-generation depiction, the Queen is featured in right-profile relief in the first Canadian coin design of a monarch since 1952 to depict a ruler without a crown. It was Queen Elizabeth II’s father George VI who last appeared without a crown in a depiction.
The reverse of the 2018 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf Gilded Coin includes the famous sugar maple leaf image from Walter Ott. Used on all coins since 1979’s introduction of the Gold Maple Leaf, this design includes engravings of the nation of issue, coin purity, weight, and metal content. The gilded finish includes a 24-karat layer of gold on the sugar maple leaf, creating stunning visual contrast between silver and gold, foreground and background on the coin’s reverse.
