The modern coat of arms for the Czech Republic was adopted in 1992 in a design from Czech heraldist Jiri Louda. The design displays the three historical regions of Czech lands that make up the modern nation: Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. From Bohemia and the whole Czech lands of history comes the two-tailed Czech lion. Both it and the flaming eagle of Moravia and Silesia are found in quadrants of the modern coat of arms.
On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz Silver Niue Czech Lion Coin is the famed two-tailed Czech Lion. The Czech Lion occupies two of the four quadrants on the coat of arms and is the heraldic beast tasked with guarding the crown of Saint Wencelas. The other two quadrants of the coat of arms including the burning eagle, one from the coat of arms of historic Moravia and the other from the coat of arms of historic Silesia. The two-tailed Czech Lion guards the national shield in this design.
The obverse of the Silver Niue Czech Lion Coin features a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s fourth-generation portrait here was created by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint in 1998.
Before the 1992 establishment of the Czech Mint, coinage for the nation of Czechoslovakia was struck by the Kremnica Mint in Slovakia. Today, the Czech Mint is the sovereign facility of the new Czech Republic and handles production of Czech koruna coins.
