The Black Bull of Clarence comes from the shield and Royal Arms of the Yorkist kings, the first of whom was Edward IV. Both Edward IV and his brother Richard III, the last York King, used the Black Bull of Clarence in the Royal Arms.
On the obverse of the 2018 2 oz Silver British Queen’s Beast Black Bull coin is Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile portrait of Her Majesty was created in 2015 by Jody Clark of the Royal Mint. It is the fifth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II since her 1953 coronation as the Queen of England; a coronation at which the 10 heraldic beasts in the Queen’s Beast Series originated.
The reverse of the Silver British Queen’s Beast Black Bull coin bears the Royal Arms of the Yorkist kings with the Black Bull of Clarence featured. The bull supports a shield with four quadrants. In two of those quadrants are the French golden lilies adopted by Edward III to mark his claim to France’s throne. The other two quadrants have the three golden lions added by Richard I.
