Block Island is named for Dutch explorer Adriaen Block and is located in the Atlantic Ocean 13 miles south of the Rhode Island coastline and 14 miles east of Montauk Point, Long Island, New York. The island has a year-round population of just 1,051 people and is a popular summer tourist destination for its cycling, hiking, sailing, fishing, and beaches.

The reverse of the 2018 5 oz Silver ATB Block Island National Wildlife Refuge coin captures the image of a black-crowned night heron as it flies over the island and one of its two iconic lighthouses, Block Island North Lighthouse.

On the obverse of 2018 5 oz ATB Block Island National Wildlife Refuge coins is the image of President George Washington. This design was created in 1932 by John Flanagan for the US quarter. Washington’s bust was put on the quarter that year to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth and it remains there to this day.
