Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore was designated a US national lakeshore by Congress in 1966 and is currently administered by the National Park Service. The park covers 73,236 acres of land on the Upper Peninsula in Michigan and is known for its breathtaking views along the colorful sandstone cliffs located northeast of the city of Munising.
On the reverse of the 2018 5 oz Colorized ATB Silver Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Coins, you’ll find the image of the well-known Chapel Rock. Many of the rock formations found in the park have been naturally sculpted over long periods of time by the waves of Lake Superior, creating scenes that resemble castle turrets and even human figures.
The colorized scene captured here depicts a bright summer day at Chapel Rock. The blue sky is dotted with small white clouds with the face of Chapel Rock captured in lighter shades of brown. The trees surrounding Chapel Rock have deep green colors while the vibrant pine tree that tops the rock has softer green hues.
On the obverse of all America the Beautiful Silver Coins is the left-profile portrait of President George Washington. The nation’s first elected leader, this image is the longest-running coin design in US circulation history. It has been in use on the US quarter since 1932 when it was placed there in honor of the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth.
