Since 1997, the US Mint has used a design of Liberty based on the Statue of Liberty. Created in 1997 by John Mercanti, the design featured on the Proof Platinum Eagle from 1997 to 2017 and continues to feature on the obverse of the bullion version. The reverse side of Platinum Eagle coins always changes, but this year the US Mint introduces a new design that is set to be a common element through at least the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence Series (2018-2020).
All 2018-W 1 oz Proof Platinum American Eagle Coins in this product listing come to you with a US Mint display box. The coins are encapsulated and set in a black velvet, satin-lined presentation case. The box includes a Certificate of Authenticity from the United States Mint as well.
On the obverse of 2018 Proof Platinum American Eagles is the first design in the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence Series. Reflecting “Life,” “Liberty,” and the Pursuit of “Happiness,” the collection starts with Liberty standing amidst an open vista with mountains in the background, sweeping fields behind her, and a river winding through the design. Liberty holds a young child in her hand representative of “Life.”
The reverse includes a new design of the American bald eagle. This bird, created by Artistic Infusion Program Designer Patricia Lucas-Morris, has its wings opened wide behind it as it clutches an olive branch. This design from Morris will continue through the three releases of the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence collection.
