The 2018 Burnished Silver American Eagle is the 10th issue of this collectible silver coin. Introduced in 2006, the Burnished Silver Eagle was briefly suspended in 2009 and 2010 as the US Mint redirected its available silver bullion blanks first to the bullion coins alone in 2009, and then the bullion and proof coins in 2010.
On the obverse of all 2018-W 1 oz Burnished Silver American Eagle coins is Adolph A. Weinman’s majestic Walking Liberty design. This image of Liberty striding toward the sunset with one hand outstretched and the American flag draped over her shoulders is one of two designs from Weinman which won artistic contests to appear on the American currency during the revolution in designs in the early 20th century. The other was Winged Liberty on the US dime.
The reverse face of 2018 Burnished Silver American Eagles includes one of the nation’s oldest coin designs. The heraldic eagle of the United States was first issued in 1794 on coins from the Philadelphia Mint. It has been updated at various points in US history, including in 1986 by John Mercanti for the Silver American Eagle collection.
