The coins in the Burnished Silver Eagle collection undergo a special production process at the United States Mint. Each of the original silver blanks used to coin the Burnished Silver Eagle is first polished in a drum with a polishing medium; in this case, steel balls are used. The blanks are removed by gloved hands, individually loaded into the coining press, and removed by gloved hands one at a time after striking.
The result of the burnishing process is a coin similar to the bullion option, but with a more unique visual appeal. Burnished Silver American Eagle coins have matte features and less shine to the background than their bullion counterparts, with a finish that is also distinctly different from the proof coin.
On the obverse of the 2018-W 1 oz Burnished Silver American Eagle coin is Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design. Created in 1916, Weinman developed a vision of Liberty representative of the nation’s drive toward a brighter future. She is depicted walking toward the setting sun on the horizon as she chases the brightness of a new day.
The reverse side of the 2018 Burnished Silver American Eagle coin includes the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design includes a bald eagle with the national heraldic shield on its chest. The eagle clutches arrows of war in one talon and the olive branch of peace in the other. A triangular cluster of 13 stars above its head represent the American Colonies which formed the original United States.
