First introduced in 1981 alongside the 1 oz and 1/4 oz coins, the 1/2 oz Gold Libertad has the third-highest mintage figure in the program’s history at 193,000, a milestone it reached in that initial 1981 release of the coins. When all five coins returned in 1991, the Mexican Mint saw drastically reduced demand for the coins. The highest mintage figure the 1/2 oz coin has reached since then came in 1992 when 25,220 coins were issued. More recently, the 2018 coin had the joint-low mintage of 1,250 coins along with the 1/4 oz coin.
On the obverse of all 2019 1/2 oz Gold Mexican Libertad Coins is a design known as Winged Victory. Her figure is based on Ancient Greek visions of Justice. She is a winged figure with a wreath crown in one hand and the broken chains of servitude in the other. In the background are the twin volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl located outside the city limits of Mexico City.
The reverse side of 2019 Gold Mexican Libertad Coins in this weight includes the modern coat of arms for Mexico. This design features an eagle on a cactus arm as it battles a serpent. The imagery is meant to reflect the country’s struggle for freedom from the tyranny of Spanish colonial rule.
All Gold Mexican Libertad coins are available from the Mexican Mint. Opened in 1535, it is the oldest operating mint in the Western Hemisphere and once struck coins for countless Spanish colonies throughout the hemisphere.
