The Rectangular Dragon coin release is in its second year of availability. The 2018 design was the same as these 2019 coins and those debut coins marked the first-ever coins with a rectangular shape. The coins feature the most prominent mythical creature in Chinese culture: the dragon. Dragons are the official symbol of the People’s Republic of China and serve as a symbol of power, military strength, good luck and fortune.
On the obverse of 2019 1 oz Silver Australian Rectangular Dragon Coins is the newest effigy of Queen Elizabeth II to feature on Australian coinage. The image is a right-profile portrait created for the Royal Mint of England in 2015 by Jody Clark. This design comes to most Australian bullion coinage in 2019 and is the sixth effigy of Her Majesty to feature on coins from Australia.
The reverse side of 2019 Silver Australian Rectangular Dragon Coins features the stylized image of a dragon in pursuit of a flaming pearl. Contrary to European depictions of the dragon, the Chinese dragon is a serpent-like beast with no wings and four (sometimes six) legs. In this design, the dragon pursues a flaming pearl, the symbol of infinite wisdom.
Founded in 1899, the Perth Mint is Australia’s oldest operating mint. Once part of the Royal Mint system on the continent, today it operates independent of the younger Royal Australian Mint and is owned by the state government of Western Australia.
