The Silver Philharmonic debuted in 2008 at the onset of the Great Recession and wasted little time becoming the best-selling silver coin on the European continent.
On the obverse of all 2019 Silver Philharmonic Coins is the image of the Great Organ. The Golden Concert Hall, also known as the Musikverein, houses this masterpiece of an instrument and is located within the capital city of Vienna in its Innere Stadt neighborhood. The coin’s weight, metal content, purity, face value, and date of issue are all engraved on this side, along with the nation of issue. All text engravings are in German.
The reverse of 2019 Silver Austrian Philharmonic Coins includes a design of nine musical instruments. Specifically, the collection includes a cello in the center flanked by two violins on either side. The background includes a harp, bassoon, flute, and a horn. Thomas Pesendorfer, Chief Engraver of the Austrian Mint, completed these designs for the series in 1989.
The Austrian Mint issues the Austrian Philharmonic coins as the official sovereign mint of the nation. The Austrian Mint issues these coins with the common Eurozone currency of Euros, however, the face value is only backed by Austria’s government and valid within Austria. Other EU nations do not support the coin as legal tender.
