Silver Libertad coins debuted in 1982 with only these 1 oz Libertads available. Though the collection now features a total of seven weights, from 1982 to 1991 there was only the 1 oz version of the coin to choose from when investing. The 1991 release saw the introduction of four fractional weights, followed by two larger coins in 1996.

The 1 oz Silver Libertad proved immensely popular in its first decade of existence, with mintage figures often exceeding 1 million coins per date mark. In fact, in the early 1990s the 1 oz coin hit its still-record high of 2.458 million coins in 1992, one year after the release of the four fractional-weight coins. In the two decades since, however, the 1 oz coin has exceeded one million coins just four times. The three consecutive years in the depths of the Great Recession (2009-2011) and again in 2016.

On the obverse of 1 oz Silver Mexican Libertad Coins, you’ll find the image of Winged Victory. A symbol of Mexico’s resistance to Spanish rule, culminating in the War of Independence in the 1820s, the design of Victoria is based largely on Greek visions of Justice.

The reverse of 2019 1 oz Silver Mexican Libertad Coins includes the design of the coat of arms for Mexico. This image of the eagle resting on a cactus arm as its battles a serpent reflects the struggle of Mexico to free itself from Spanish rule. Around this design are 10 historic versions of the same seal. Only the 1 oz, 2 oz, and 5 oz Silver Libertads have this design for the reverse.
