The creature gets its name from the neck and head that resemble the appearance of a horse. The segmented body on a seahorse has bony armor and an upright posture with a curled, prehensile tail. In this design, the seahorse is in the center in right-profile relief with Polynesian-styled tribal waves in the lower-left background field and seagrass along the top rocker of the design field.

On the reverse side of 2019 Silver Samoa Seahorse Coins is the coat of arms for Samoa. The seal is inspired by the United Nations seal and features a cross-hatched grid and fern leaves behind the crest. A banner along the bottom has the national motto in Samoan which translates as “Samoa is founded on God.”
