The Australian continent is home to both freshwater crocodiles and saltwater crocodiles. The former is limited to the bodies of freshwater in the continent’s tropical regions and grow to sizes of just 3 meters in length on average. The saltwater crocodile has a much wider range that encompasses most of the eastern coast of Australia and these beasts grow to 4 meters in length on average, with many found in the wild that measure 7 meters in length and weigh more than 1,000 kilograms.

On the reverse side of the 2019 10 oz Silver Australian Mother and Baby Crocodile Coin, you’ll notice the softer side of these ancient beasts at work. The average female crocodile lays between 30 and 60 eggs that she will guard for up to three months while the eggs mature. Once the eggs begin to hatch, the mother digs down to the nest and carries the hatchlings to the water in her mouth. Despite having a crushing bite force, these mothers exhibit the utmost care in carrying their young.

The obverse of 2019 Silver Australian Mother and Baby Crocodile Coins bears an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Here, Her Majesty is depicted in right-profile relief in a design created by Jody Clark. This is the sixth-generation effigy to feature on Australian coins during her reign and depicts the Queen wearing the Royal Diadem crown, earrings, and Victorian coronation necklace.
