The Silver Libertad series offers investors seven weights to choose from when buying. The largest of these are the 5 oz and 2 oz Silver Mexican Libertad coins. While the series dates back to 1982, the 2 oz Silver Libertad was not made available until 1996. Its highest single-year mintage came in its debut when 50,000 coins were sold. The 2 oz coin has only sold more than 20,000 in any other year twice. 46,000 coins were sold in 2009 and 20,400 coins in 2018.
On the obverse side of 2019 2 oz Silver Mexican Libertad Coins is the image of Winged Victory. The first appearance of Winged Victory on Mexican coinage came in 1921 when her figure was placed on the commemorative Centenario. This gold coin was initially used in circulation and then struck only for commemorative purposes. The coin was issued to mark the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain.
Her figure stands in a slight left-profile relief on this side of the coin. She holds in her right hand a wreath crown as a symbol of self-governance, a factor hard won by Mexicans in their struggle against Spain. Her left hand clutches a set of broken chains symbolizing the break from Spanish oppression.
The reverse of all 2 oz Silver Mexican Libertad Coins includes the design of the coat of arms. The 2 oz and other larger coins in the collection have the modern coat of arms in the center of the design field with 10 historic versions encircling its figure around the outer edge of the design surface.
