Texas is one of the most unique states in the United States of America. Throughout its history, six flags have flown over the state including those of Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederacy, and the United States. Among the relics of Spanish rule over Texas are various Catholic missions. The 2019 5 oz Silver ATB San Antonio Missions National Historical Park Coin features symbols honoring the park that preserves the impact of Spanish Catholic missionaries in 17th and 18th century Texas.

Although many visitors to the city of San Antonio are familiar with the Alamo, itself a Spanish Catholic mission, the popular tourist site is not part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The park was established as a national Historical Park in 1983 with the aim of preserving four of the five Spanish frontier missions in the area around San Antonio.
Spanish forces attempted, among other things, to bring Catholicism to the indigenous people of Central America and their colonies in what is now the United States. Throughout the San Antonio area, Spanish missionaries constructed various missions to house Catholic missionaries and provide a base for spreading Catholicism in the New World.
On the reverse of these 2019 5 oz Silver ATB San Antonio Missions National Historical Park Coins is a reproduction of the visuals found on the Spanish colonial real used in the New World. The design includes symbols such as arches and a bell representing community, a lion representing Spanish cultural heritage, and wheat representing farming. You’ll also notice waves which represent the waters of the San Antonio River, on which all five missions in the area are located.
The obverse of 2019 5 oz Silver ATB Coins includes the design of President George Washington. This image is based on John Flanagan’s 1932 design for the US quarter and captures Washington in left-profile relief in a design based on William Cousins’ 1786 bust of Washington.
