Mexican Libertad coins from the Mexican Mint are known for their early introductions and slow expansions to feature fractional weights and larger-than-1-oz coins over time. The Gold Libertad first appeared in 1981, but was intermittently struck from 1991-1994, issued in 2000, and not offered annually until 2002. Proof Gold Libertads have their own unique history. The Proof Gold Libertads have an introduction path as unique and sporadic as its gold bullion counterpart. The first Proof Gold Libertad was a 1 oz coin issued in 1983. The next was a 1/2 oz gold coin released in 1989. Following that, a 1/4 oz coin was issued in 2004. Regular production of Proof Gold Mexican Libertads did not start until 2005.
Since 2005, the Proof Gold Mexican Libertad coins have been available with very low mintage figures. In fact, the highest cumulative issue between the five coins was just 10,500 coins in 2016. No coins were issued in the Proof Gold Libertad range in 2012. The Mexican Mint introduced Proof Gold Libertad five-coin sets immediately in 2005, with the highest mintage figures for this option set at 500. Most years have seen an issue lower than that.
On the obverse of 2019 Proof Gold Mexican Libertad coins, you’ll find the vision of Winged Victory. She is depicted as you would find her atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City today. The background field includes the volcanic mountains of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the distance. Engravings offer the weight, purity, and metal content of the coins along with a mint mark from the Mexican Mint.
The reverse side of the fractional-weight 2019 Proof Gold Mexican Libertad Coins includes the modern coat of arms for Mexico. This seal depicts an eagle on the arm of a cactus locked in battle with a snake. On the reverse of the 1 oz Proof Gold Libertad, you’ll find this seal plus a circle that depicts each of the 10 historical versions of the coat of arms used over the past 200 years.
