The 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagle coin debuted in 1988. This was two years after the debut of the Gold American Eagle Series, a collection that initially featured four weights in bullion and just a 1 oz gold coin in proof. In 1987, the US Mint unveiled the 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagle. It wasn’t until 1988 that these 1/4 oz and the 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles arrived for collectors.

On the obverse side of 2019 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagles is the image of Lady Liberty. This design comes from Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was created in 1907. Originally intended to be struck in high relief, the debut of this image of the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907 was a standard strike as the US Mint lacked the capacity for high-relief coining in 1907.

This design captures Liberty in front-facing relief walking toward the viewer with a torch held high overhead in her right hand. Her left hand clutches the olive branch of peace. In the background, you’ll notice the US Capitol Building at her feet. Around her figure are 50 stars representing each of the states in the Union.

The reverse side of the 2019 1/4 oz Proof Gold American Eagle Coins includes the image of an American bald eagle flying over the family nest. Inside the nest, you’ll notice a female eagle guarding a young hatchling.

All Proof Gold Eagle coins are produced by the United States Mint at its West Point Mint facility. Since 2001, Proof Gold Eagles have featured “W” mint marks to denote the production facility.
