All Gold American Eagle coins from the United States Mint have experienced dips in demand in recent years. Since 2015, all four weights in the series have fallen significantly in terms of demand and mintage. The 1/2 oz Gold Eagle had a mintage of just 19,000 coins in 2019. That marks the lowest mintage in program history to date, falling well below the previous mark of 24,100 coins back in 1991.
The obverse of 2020 1/2 oz Gold American Eagle Coin features the depiction of Lady Liberty. This groundbreaking design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens depicts Liberty in front-facing relief with her torch held high in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. The US Capitol Building is depicted in the distant background.
This inspirational design changed the face of American gold coinage in the early 20th century. It was the kind of modern design President Theodore Roosevelt was seeking when he launched a drive to redesign all American coin designs to match the nation’s growing international profile in the early 1900s.
On the reverse of 2020 Gold American Eagle coins is a depiction of an American bald eagle family. Created for the Gold American Eagle in 1986 by Miley Busiek, the design centers on an eagle’s nest with a female in the nest guarding a young hatchling. Flying overhead is a male eagle returning to the nest.
All Gold American Eagle Coins are available from the West Point Mint. These bullion versions of the Gold Eagle bear no mint marks.
