Tigers are the largest extant cat species in the world and come from the genus Panthera. Although tigers once roamed large swaths of Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, and various islands throughout Southeast Asia, the modern range of the tiger has been cut down by some 93% compared to the historic maximum range.
Modern tigers are largely confined to fragmented ranges that include temperate forests in Siberia, northeast China, and the subtropical and tropical forests of the Indian Subcontinent and the island of Sumatra. Though no longer found on the Korean peninsula, the tiger once roamed the entirety of the peninsula from north to south and remains a key cultural figure in Korea.
The obverse field of 2020 1/2 oz Gold South Korean Tigers includes a depiction of a young tiger cub. Symbolizing rebirth and renewal in the series, the 2020 design offers a look at the young cub as it lays on the gates of the Gyeongbokgung Palace. The Namsan Tower in Seoul is featured along the right side of the design field with blooming azaleas and forsythias around the base of the tower representing the new life that comes with spring.
Commonly referred to as the Seoul Tower, the Namsan Tower is a communications and observation tower that is visible throughout the city of Seoul. The tower is situated atop Namsan Mountain in the center of Seoul. Rising to 774 feet in elevation, it is the second-highest point in the city.
On the reverse side of 2020 Gold South Korean Tigers, you will find an image of the Korean peninsula. This artistic map of the peninsula is formed through the use of letters from the Hangul, the written Korean alphabet.
These 2020 1/2 oz Gold South Korean Tigers are available to you individually housed in plastic capsules or in rolls of 20 medals. Each one comes in Brilliant Uncirculated condition from the mint.
