Collectible Gold Libertads debuted in 1983 with a 1 oz coin boasting a slim mintage of just 88 coins. The production of proof coins was limited at first, with the next coin released in 1989 in this 1/2 oz gold weight with another minimal mintage of only 704 coins. 2004 marked the start of annual production, at least in the 1/4 oz gold weight. In 2005, all five of the weights in the series became annual-release coins. In 2018, the mint introduced the reverse-proof coin with 1 oz and 1/2 oz gold options.
All of these 2020 1/2 oz Reverse Proof Gold Mexican Libertads are available for shipping inside of individual acrylic capsules. The coins come with mirrored designs overlaying frosted background fields to create stunning visual contrast.
The obverse of 2020 Reverse Proof Gold Libertads comes with a depiction of the effigy of Winged Victory. Her figure is a symbol of Mexico’s victory over Spain in its war of independence. The 11-year conflict culminated in 1821 with Mexico’s victory. The statue of Winged Victory is perched atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in the center of Mexico City. Her figure is shown here with a wreath in her right hand and broken chains in her left hand. The mountains of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl are visible in the distant background. Both mountains are active volcanic peaks situated outside of Mexico City.
On the reverse side of the 2020 1/2 oz Reverse Proof Gold Mexican Libertad is an image of the Mexican coat of arms. The modern coat of arms shows a powerful golden eagle on the perch of a cactus as it uses its talons and beak to control a rattlesnake. The design is framed below by a wreath of oak and laurel leaves.
