Introduced in 1983, the Proof Silver Mexican Libertad was originally only available as a 1 oz silver coin. It was offered in 1983 and became an annual staple from the Mexican Mint in 1986. The series grew to include the four fractional-ounce coins in 1992 and grew again in 1996 with the introduction of the 2 oz and 5 oz silver coins.

The obverse face of the 2020 1/20 oz Proof Silver Mexican Libertads comes with a depiction of Winged Victory and the mountains of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. Winged Victory is the national personification of Mexico and first featured on Mexican coins in 1921 with the release of the 50 peso gold Centenario. This image of Victory is inspired by the statue of the Angel of Independence from the Mexican Independence Victory Column.
On the reverse side of 2020 Proof Silver Mexican Libertads is the modern version of the Mexican Coat of Arms. The national emblem represents the federal government of Mexico and includes a Mexican golden eagle on the perch of a cactus with a serpent in its beak and talons.
The Mexican Mint is located in Mexico City and is controlled by Banco de Mexico and the federal government. Founded in 1535, it is the oldest operating mint facility in the Western Hemisphere. You will notice “MO” mint marks from the mint on the obverse.
