Elephants are beautiful and majestic beasts that have roamed the African continent for centuries. Since 2004, the African bush elephant has been listed with “vulnerable” status on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. Habitat loss through deforestation in Africa and poaching for meat and ivory tusks have pushed the number of African bush elephants down in recent decades.

The African bush elephant is the specific species featured on the African Wildlife Series Gold Somalia Elephant coins from the Bavarian State Mint. A full-grown African bush elephant stands 13 feet tall at the shoulders and weighs up to 11.5 short tons. African bush elephants inhabit a wide range of habitats on the African continent, including savannas, woodlands, and wetlands.

On the obverse of 2020 1/25 oz Gold Somalia Elephant Coins is the coat of arms for Somalia. The national symbol includes a crowned shield with a single star in the center set on a background field of horizontal lines. The shield features a leopard on either side for support and includes elements of spears, fern leaves, and a ribbon. “Somali Republic” is inscribed above the shield and the face value below. The year of issue is split on either side of the shield as “20” and “20.”

The reverse of 2020 Gold Somalia Elephant Coins includes the image of two adult African bush elephants. These massive beasts are depicted in side-profile relief facing in toward the center at one another. Both have mature tusks, but the elephant on the left is clearly the leader of the family unit as the more mature of the two as denoted by its much longer tusks.
