Gold Mexican Libertads were first issued by the Mexican Mint in 1981 with the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz coins available. That was a one-time release, with the coins not returning until 1991. The 1991 release of the coins included those three original weights and two weights of 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz gold.
From 1991 to 1994, the Mexican Mint issued the new five-coin series. It was halted from 1995 to 1999, struck in all five weights in 2000, and halted again in 2001. Since 2002, however, the collection has seen regular issues each year with very low mintage figures. The 1/4 oz Gold Libertad’s highest mintage figure in history was 313,000 in 1981. That is the second-highest mintage in the history of the series behind the 1 oz coin from that same year. In recent years, the 1/4 oz Gold Libertad has had mintages of 500, 1,250, and 1,500 from 2017 to 2019 respectively.
On the obverse of 2020 1/4 oz Gold Mexican Libertads is a depiction of Winged Victory. Her figure is based on the goddess Victoria who is associated with victory in battle. The statue is officially known as the Angel of Independence.
The reverse of 2020 1/4 oz Gold Libertads features the Mexican coat of arms. The seal features a Mexican golden eagle battling against a serpent on a cactus with its beak and talons controlling the snake. The emblem is surrounded by the inscription in Spanish of the national name, “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” above and a wreath below.
