Although 2020 is the 54th year of availability for Gold Krugerrand coins, the fractional-ounce options have not been available quite that long. The 1 oz gold coin was issued first in 1967 and was the only option through 1979. In 1980 with demand for the Gold Krugerrand at all-time highs, the South African Mint introduced three fractional-ounce coins. Among these is the 1/4 oz gold coin.
The obverse face of 2020 1/4 oz Gold South African Krugerrands bears the portrait of Paul Kruger. The former President of the South African Republic, Kruger was the first person to hold that title and served from 1883 to 1900 when he was forced into exile. Kruger is featured in left-profile relief on this side with inscriptions in Afrikaans of “Suid Afrika” and in English of “South Africa.”
On the reverse side of 2020 Gold South African Krugerrands is the image of a Springbok antelope. This medium-sized antelope is the only member of its genus and features a unique method of movement not found in other types of antelopes. The springbok can do what is called “pronking,” a movement in which the creature performs multiple leaps into the air and achieves heights of 6.6 feet off the ground.
The South African Mint produces the Gold Krugerrands in tandem with the Rand Refinery. The mint is owned by the South African Reserve Bank and is responsible for coining Krugerrands as well as printing other Rand circulation banknotes for the nation.
