Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design of Lady Liberty features on the obverse sides of the Gold American Eagles. The image captures Liberty walking forward from Washington D.C. with the US Capitol Building visible at her feet. Rays of sunshine emerge from behind her figure with a ring of 50 stars surrounding her image. In her right hand, she holds a torch up high to light the way and an olive branch of peace in her left hand indicating a desire for a peaceful future.

Miley Busiek designed the image on the reverse of 2020 Gold American Eagles in 1986. Used exclusively on the Gold Eagles, the design includes a male eagle in flight over the nest, where a young hatchling seeks the protection of its mother’s wing.

All 2020 Gold American Eagles are produced by the United States Mint. Though the coins do not feature a mint mark, all modern Gold American Eagles are produced by the West Point Mint facility. Inscriptions include “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” “In God We Trust,” and “1 oz Fine Gold – 50 Dollars.”
