When it was introduced in 1986, the Gold American Eagle became the first gold coin produced by the United States Mint since 1933. At that time, the US Mint had suspended all gold coin production and recalled gold in circulation to combat the Great Depression by melting down gold coins to boost gold bullion holdings in the Treasury Department.

Between 1837 and 1933, the United States only produced gold coins with 90% gold content. Earlier gold coins issued between 1794 and 1834 featured 22-karat gold, by in large. With 22-karat gold content, Gold American Eagles represented the purest gold coins from the US Mint since 1834. Gold Eagles have 91.67% gold content, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.

The obverse side of 2020 1 oz Gold American Eagles features Lady Liberty. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this inspiring image depicts Liberty in front-facing relief as she marches forward from Washington D.C. with a large torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. Rays of sunshine emerge from behind her figure and 50 stars encircle her on the design field.

On the obverse of 2020 Gold American Eagles, a male American bald eagle soars toward the nest. Within that nest, a female eagle offers her wing as shelter to a young hatchling. This design was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek and is exclusive to the Gold American Eagle.
