Known as the racerunner, or Zando to the locals, the whiptail lizard is a critically endangered species that is endemic to just a few regions in the Western Hemisphere. The vast majority of subspecies within the whiptail lizard family are found in Central America and South America. The subspecies featured in this design is the only one endemic to the islands of the Caribbean and is only found on St. Lucia.
The obverse side of 2020 Proof Colorized Silver St. Lucia Whiptail Lizards features Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is depicted in right-profile relief in a design exclusive to the EC8 Series. While the bust of Her Majesty comes from the Royal Mint and was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, the branches that flank her figure are found only on these coins.
On the reverse field of 2020 1 oz Silver St. Lucia Whiptail Lizards is a depiction of a whiptail lizard on a rock in the foreground. The tremendous Pitons of St. Lucia are visible in the background. These collapsed volcanic peaks are dormant and are World Heritage sites located on the western side of the island. The body of the lizard has a brilliant blue colorization.
