The EC8 Series launched in 2018 as the most robust series of bullion coins available for the Caribbean region. The series features individual designs for each of the eight nations that use the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank system. Each one of those designs was released on 1 oz silver and 1 oz gold coins, with Brilliant Uncirculated and Colorized options available for both metals.
The obverse of the 2020 Silver Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner features a right-profile bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in the fourth-generation design that was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint of England. The design is flanked on either side by fern leaves and features inscriptions that identify the issuing bank, the Queen, the face value, and the coin’s weight, purity, and metal content.
On the reverse side of 2020 1 oz Silver Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runners is a new depiction of the namesake ship. The Antigua & Barbuda coin in the series has featured new images of a rum-running ship with each release. This year’s design shows the ship as it races across open waters. Rum runners was a term applied to individuals and ships that would move illicit cargos of rum and other alcohol between the islands of the Caribbean and to mainland North American colonies of Spain and England. The ships would move the rum illicitly because of the high taxes imposed by the government in the name of making a profit off the industry.
