The Perth Mint launched the Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagle in 2014. The series features designs on the reverse from John Mercanti, the former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint who contributed designs to the American sovereign mint’s popular Silver Eagle and Platinum Eagle Series. Mercanti created just two designs in the first four years, with the 2014-2015 and 2016-2017 releases sharing individual designs. Beginning in 2018, the Perth Mint used new images of the wedge tail on the reverse with each release.

The obverse side of 2020 1 oz Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagles includes an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is depicted here in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. Created by Jody Clark, the portrait shows the Queen at the age of 89.

On the reverse, the 2020 Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagle has a depiction of the powerful wedge tail eagle as it swoops down with its talons extended. The wedge tail is the largest bird of prey in Australia and has a wingspan that can extend up to 9ft 4in in total length. The wedge tail is part of a family of eagles known as booted eagles, of which it is one of 12 members.
