The coelophysis was placed in a genus of Coelurus by Edward Drinker Cope in 1887 and the creature was later described in greater detail in 1889. The coelophysis is a theropod dinosaur that lived between 216 and 196 million years ago during what was known as the Triassic Period. However, scattered samples of the creature have also been found in geologic formations that date to the Late Triassic and even Early Jurassic Periods.
