Just one year after its massive triumph in meeting President Kennedy’s 1961 goal to send a man to the Moon and return him safely to Earth, NASA faced a different kind of challenge. Apollo 13 was meant to be the third-manned flight of the Apollo space program to land humans on the Moon and was the seventh in the program overall. Instead, it turned into a rescue mission that showcased the ingenuity of NASA in saving lives from a world away. Apollo 13’s mission was to send mankind to the Moon once again, just one year after NASA had succeeded in doing so with its Apollo 11 mission in the summer of 1969. However, two days into the mission the crew suffered a devastating blow to that goal when a faulty wire ignited a small explosion in the oxygen tanks and vented critical oxygen out into space.
The three-man crew was forced to endure incredible hardships in the four days to come. Rather than living in the command module, the men had to squeeze into the two-man lunar lander to conserve resources in the command module. Over a four-day trip around the dark side of the Moon to return to Earth, the men lived in a wet, cold capsule with little potable water and low oxygen levels.
Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the obverse of 2020 2 oz Silver 50th Anniversary of Apollo 13 Coins. This Pobjoy Mint-exclusive design depicts the Queen in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head.
Apollo 13’s crew capsule splashes down in the South Pacific on the reverse side of 2020 Silver 50th Anniversary of Apollo 13 Coins. The capsule splashes down with its parachutes falling beside it as a US Navy recovery helicopter launched from the USS Iwo Jima in the background comes to recover the astronauts.
NASA scientists and specialists in Houston were able to work with the men aboard Apollo 13 to devise systems that could keep them alive for four days as the spacecraft shot around the Moon to propel it in a trajectory back toward Earth without overuse of power that would have otherwise left the crew stranded in space.
These 2020 2 oz Silver 50th Anniversary of Apollo 13 Coins are available to you individually housed inside of black Pobjoy Mint display boxes with a Certificate of Authenticity included.
