Fafnir is brilliantly featured across the obverse of each round in this set. What makes this set unique is that the rounds are plated in terracotta and ruthenium.
The obverse design showcases Fafnir’s head and upper body wrapping up the round. It seemingly vanishes at the top of the round, but Fafnir’s claws and tongue are visible in the image. “Fafnir” is seen written on this face of the round, as well as key details about the round.
Picking up where the obverse image left off, the reverse side of the round features the lower body of Fafnir. When both sides of the round are displayed together, you can see Fafnir’s body wrapped like an infinity symbol around the image of the Bicephalous Eagle. This two-headed eagle is found in numerous designs from Germania Mint.
The double-headed eagle is the Roman mythological symbol for the god Janus, representing the guardian of doors, passages, gates, and bridges. Janus is the god of all origins. The heads of the eagle face opposite directions, which represents both the future and past. The phrases “Germania 2020” and “5 Marks” are visible on the reverse of the rounds.
