The Gold South African Krugerrand was the first major gold bullion coin program introduced when it debuted in 1967. For more than a decade, it was the only gold coin available as a private vehicle for gold ownership. In 1979, the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf debuted and became the first .9999 fine gold coin in the world in 1982, shortly after the Chinese Mint introduced the Gold Chinese Panda coin.

Gold Chinese Pandas debuted in 1982 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold options. In 1983, the series gained a 1/20 oz gold coin. In 2001, the Chinese Mint adjusted the face values of the coins upward. Then a 1 oz gold coin, it was increased from 100 Yuan to 500 Yuan. In 2016, the Chinese Mint adjusted the total weights of the coins downward with the 1 oz coin becoming a 30 Gram coin.

On the obverse of 2020 30 Gram Gold Chinese Pandas is a depiction of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This building is featured on the obverse of the Gold Panda every year and is accompanied by two simple inscriptions. The date mark of the coin and the name of the “People’s Republic of China,” in Mandarin, are featured on this face of the coin.

The reverse of 2020 30 Gram Gold Pandas comes with an image of a young Giant Panda cub. Designed by Song Lina, the image depicts a playful panda cub lying on its back amidst a field of grass and brush as it reaches up to pluck some bamboo leaves for its next meal.
