Proof Silver Mexican Libertads were introduced in 1983 by the Mexican Mint with a 1 oz silver coin. It was offered for just that one year before returning in 1986 on a permanent basis. The 1 oz silver coins are the longest-running option in the collection. Four fractional-ounce weights of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz silver were introduced in 1992. The 5 oz proof silver coin debuted in 1996 along with the 2 oz silver coin. Only one year in the history of the program has seen a suspension in production. In 2012, only the 1 oz Proof Silver Libertad was produced.
All of the 2020 5 oz Proof Silver Mexican Libertads in this listing arrive with a protective plastic capsule to house the coin. These coins are available as traditional proof specimens that feature frosted designs and mirrored background fields.
The obverse face of the 2020 5 oz Proof Silver Mexican Libertads bears an image of Winged Victory. The particular design of Victory shown here is inspired by the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City that includes a 22-foot statue of Victory at the top looking over the city.
On the reverse side of 2020 5 oz Proof Silver Mexican Libertads is a depiction of the Mexican coat of arms. The modern version of this seal is found in the center of the design field with the eagle battling a serpent surrounded by “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” and a wreath. On these larger coins, the Mexican Mint also features a ring of 10 historic versions of the Mexican coat of arms in the design.
