Burnished Silver Eagles were issued by the United States Mint starting in 2006 on the 20th anniversary of the series. The coins were available from 2006 to 2008, but suspended for two years during the early part of the Great Recession. Demand for silver bullion pinched the supply of available silver blanks. As the US Mint is congressionally mandated to strike the BU version of the coin each year, the proof and burnished coins were suspended to ensure enough blanks were available for the BU coins. This resulted in a one-year suspension of the proof coin (2009) and a two-year suspension of the burnished coins (2009-2010).

The obverse side of all 2020-W 1 oz Burnished Silver American Eagles includes the image of Walking Liberty. Originally used on the US half dollar from 1916 to 1947, this iconic design features Liberty walking from right to left across the coin’s design field toward the sun as it crests a mountain peak in the design element.

On the reverse of 2020-W 1 oz Burnished Silver Eagles is the modern heraldic eagle of the United States. Modified in 1986 for the debut of this series by John Mercanti, the design shows the eagle with the US national shield on its chest, the olive branch of peace in one talon, and the arrows of war in the other. There are 13 stars arranged in a triangular cluster above the eagle.
