The 1 oz silver coins were originally offered in bullion and proof versions, with a burnished option introduced in 2006. The proof coins were struck every year up to 2008, with the program undergoing a stoppage in 2009 so that all blanks could be redirected to the striking of bullion coins in 2009.

Walking Liberty is depicted on the obverse of 2020-W 1 oz Proof Silver American Eagles. Designed in 1916, Walking Liberty originally featured on the obverse of the US half-dollar silver coin from 1916 to 1947. Her figure is depicted in left-profile relief walking from right to left across the design field of the coin. Her right hand reaches out toward the sun on the horizon as her left hand clutches branches of oak and laurel. She also wears the American flag over her shoulders.
For the reverse, 2020-W Proof Silver Eagles have the heraldic eagle of the United States. Refined for this series in 1986 by John Mercanti, the heraldic eagle has the American heraldic shield on its chest with the arrows of war in one talon and the olive branch of peace in the other. All 2020 Proof Silver Eagles have a “W” mint mark on this face of the coin below the heraldic eagle in the lower-left field.
