The first release of Australian Kookaburras came in 1990. The series was the first from the Perth Mint to feature native animal species endemic to the continent. Not only did the Perth Mint establish a track record for excellence with the kookaburra and its new annual designs on the reverse, it also established the basis for upcoming programs that include the Australian Koala, Australian Wedge Tail Eagle, Australian Kangaroo, and the Australian Emu.
All of the 2021 1/10 oz Gold Australian Kookaburras offered here come in Brilliant Uncirculated condition from the mint. The coins are housed inside of protective plastic capsules and boast yet another new design in the Australian Kookaburra Series. This year’s design once again comes from Aleysha Howarth, a well-known Perth Mint designer.
On the obverse field of 2021 Gold Australian Kookaburras is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the sixth-generation depiction of Her Majesty to feature on Australian coins and the first since 1966 to include her full neckline and shoulders within the image. The Queen is shown at the age of 89 in the portrait and wears the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. This crown is part of the official Crown Jewels and includes more than 1,300 diamonds in its setting that weigh in at more than 300 karats.
The reverse face of the 2021 1/10 oz Gold Australian Kookaburra features a new depiction of the kookaburra. The largest member of the kingfisher species, the kookaburra is synonymous with the Australian Outback. Its call, similar to the sound of human laughter, is the focal point of countless soundtrack recordings of the Outback.
