The Bavarian State Mint initially introduced the Somalia Elephant Series of coins in 1999. Known as the African Wildlife Series, these coins were available predominantly in 1 oz silver and known as the Silver Zambian Elephant. The coins were issued as such from 1999 to 2003 using new reverse designs with each date mark.
With the transition of the series to the Silver Somalia Elephant in 2004, the program began an upward trajectory that would make it one of the most popular silver coins in the world. The series continued with the use of a new reverse design each year, while both enhancing the silver purity of the coins and adding more silver options to the program such as these 1/10 oz silver coins.
The obverse of 2021 Silver Somalia Elephants comes with a depiction of the national coat of arms. The Somalia coat of arms features a crowned element along the top of the shield, a background field of horizontal lines, and a single star at the center. The shield is supported by leopards on the sides.
On the reverse field of 2021 1/10 oz Silver Elephants is the African bush elephant. In this design, the bush elephant is shown walking toward the viewer with its large tusks nearly breaking the field of the coin and its trunk dangling into the rim of the design field.
