The coin’s fine artwork and brilliant finish make it a naturally prized collector’s item and a perfect gift for special occasions. The history of the Dalmatian dog breed dates back centuries, and the international Cynological Federation based its 1994 recognition of the breed as native to Croatia on images and documents of the early 16th century. First a hunting dog, and then a beloved coach drivers’ and carriage drovers’ dog, the Dalmatian went on to become an iconic symbol of the American firehouse when firefighters who relied on horse-drawn carriages learned these dogs were a perfect fit for companionship and support of their horses.
A profile portrait of a Dalmatian dog features on the coin’s obverse side, with its signature, spotted fur replicating the shapes of the islands off Croatia’s coast. The backdrop is formed by a map of the Croatian mainland, a coat of arms, and the inscriptions “50 kuna” in the Cyrillic alphabet along with “Republika Hrvatska.”
A Dalmatian dog couple, one seated and one standing, dominates the reverse. They’re joined by the inscriptions “Dalmatinski Pas” and “Canis Dalmaticus,” along with one for the issuing year “2021.”
