The 2021 release of the Gold American Eagles from the United States Mint marks the 35th anniversary of the nation’s official gold bullion series. Though a new reverse design element is planned for mid-2021 to mark a change in direction for the series, the 2021 coins will all debut with the classic design combinations intact until the new designs are ready for the coining process.

The United States Mint announced at the end of 2019 that the 2021 release of the American Eagle Coins, both gold and silver, would feature new reverse design elements. Throughout 2020, a design competition was hosted and a broad range of possible new designs was whittled down to four in total: two each for the silver and gold coins. However, with those new designs and accompanying dies not ready for the start of 2021 coining, the Gold Eagle debuts in 2021 with the classic design pairing still in use.
All of the 2021 1/2 oz Gold American Eagles available to purchase today come with individual or multiple packaging options. Individual coins will be housed inside of protective plastic flips, while multiples are offered inside of mint tubes of 40 coins. All of the coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
On the obverse side of 2021 Gold American Eagles is a classic image of Lady Liberty in front-facing relief. This depiction of Liberty was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and submitted to the US Mint for consideration along with other Liberty designs. It depicts Liberty walking away from Washington D.C. as she holds up a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand.
The reverse face of the 2021 1/2 oz Gold American Eagle bears the image of the family of bald eagles for the last time. This design comes from Miley Busiek and has been exclusive to this series since its 1986 debut. In the image, a male eagle flies over the nest as a female eagle guards the hatchling within the nest.
