Please Keep in Mind: There may be delays in the initial production and distribution of the Type 2 coins. The US Mint has to pause Type 1 production, install new dies in its coining presses, and then resume coining with the new Type 2 designs. This process can take extra time.
The United States Mint’s release of its Gold Eagle Type 2 Coins comes midyear in 2021 as the mint transitions away from its original design combinations to feature a new reverse design. The 2021 cycle started with Type 1 coins, those bearing the Liberty design with the family of bald eagles on the reverse. The Type 2 coins continue with Liberty on the obverse and now feature an all-new bald eagle image on the reverse. The United States Mint held an artistic competition through the first half of 2020 looking for new designs to replace the existing reverse bald eagle designs on both the Silver Eagles and Gold Eagles. In the end, from a field of more than 30 designs for each coin, the US Mint chose one design for the silver coin and one for the gold coin. Jennie Norris is the artist behind the new design on the reverse of the Gold American Eagles.
All of the 2021 1/4 oz Gold American Eagle Type 2s listed here are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins are offered with individual plastic flips or plastic tubes of 40 coins.
On the obverse of 2021 1/4 oz Gold American Eagles is an effigy of Lady Liberty. The depiction shown here was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. President Theodore Roosevelt personally commissioned Saint-Gaudens to help redesign American gold coinage in 1905. The depiction of Liberty featured on the modern Gold Eagle bullion coin first graced the Gold $20 Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.
The reverse side of the 2021 Gold American Eagle Type 2 Coins comes with a brand-new design for the first time in the history of the series. The all-new design shows the head of a bald eagle in left-profile relief as it gazes off into the distance, with its keen eye visible and its powerful hooked beak captured in the design as well.
