The United States Mint announced in late 2019 that both the Silver Eagle and Gold Eagle would receive revamped, modern designs of the American bald eagle for the reverse of the respective programs. For the Gold Eagle, that means an end to the use of Miley Busiek’s design from 1986. However, with the US Mint pressing forward into the production of 2021 Gold Eagles and a final design not yet chosen, the 2021 release will start with the original designs still available together.
Lady Liberty is showcased in front-facing relief on the obverse of the 2021 1/4 oz Gold American Eagles. This design image was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. Saint-Gaudens was personally commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to create some new, modern images of Liberty for national coinage in the early 20th century. His Liberty bust, with her full figure walking away from Washington D.C., is one of the most popular in American history.
A family of American bald eagles features in the reverse design of 2021 Gold American Eagles. Created for this collection in 1986 by Miley Busiek, the design shows a male eagle flying over the family nest as a female eagle shelters a young hatchling under her wing.
