The first known written mention of the Dalmatian dog dates back to the writings of the Bishop of Dakovo in 1374, who gave an account of a hunting dog with short white hair and black spots that he called “Canis Dalmaticus.” The international Cynological Foundation found more abundant records going back to the 16th century that justified authenticating the breed as native, or autochthonous, to Croatia, which it did in 1994.
Nikola Vurag’s profile portrait of a Dalmatian dog dominates the coin’s obverse, with its distinctive spots arrayed in the shape of Croatia’s offshore islands. In the backdrop are a map of Croatia and a sea wave pattern, along with a coat of arms, the inscription “150 kuna” in Cyrillic lettering, and the republic’s official name, “Republika Hrvatska.”
On the coin’s reverse are images of a pair of Dalmatian dogs posed sitting and standing, one in front of the other, in a way that conveys their sleek physiques. They are accompanied by the year, “2021,” and the inscriptions “Dalmatinski Pas” and “Canis Dalmaticus.”
