The archaeopteryx represents a unique species of dinosaur. Finding an exact spot in the evolutionary cycle to put the archaeopteryx has been a challenge for the scientific community. It has definite features similar to modern birds, most notably a proper wing length for its size to accommodate flight and a feathered frame. However, it also had many features common to dinosaurs of the era, such as a long, bony tail and a jaw filled with sharp teeth. Most believe the archaeopteryx represents a transitional era in evolution between early, flightless dinosaurs and modern birds.
All of the 2021 1 oz Colorized Silver Congo Archaeopteryx Coins come with protective plastic capsules. The coins in this release are Brilliant Uncirculated specimens that have been enhanced with an application of colorized lacquer on the reverse to creature eye-catching brilliance for the design element. With a population of 105 million people, the DRC is the most populous Francophone country in the world and the second-largest by land area in all of Africa. The national coat of arms featured here was adopted in 2006 and features a slab of rock with a leopard head above, a spear on the right, and an elephant tusk on the left.
The reverse field of 2021 1 oz Colorized Congo Archaeopteryx Coins features the dinosaur from the Late Jurassic Period perched on a branch. The archaeopteryx is shown here with brilliant colors in its plumage and the lush jungles of its natural environment in the background. Though it appears quite large in this image, the archaeopteryx was roughly the size of a magpie or raven.
