The 2021 release of Gold American Eagles will go down as the most unique in the long history of the series. The 2021 date mark is not only the 35th anniversary of the series, but it is also the first in the collection to have a refreshed design element. As if all of that wasn’t enough, the US Mint also issued two design combinations.
2021 started with the production of Gold American Eagles using the original design combinations on the coins. By midyear, the US Mint paused production to replace its dies and then begin striking the new design combinations with the all-new reverse image. Dealers have differentiated between the two 2021-dated coins as the Type 1 and Type 2 coins.
Lady Liberty features on the obverse of 2021 Gold American Eagles. The design found here was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and originally featured on the Gold $20 Double Eagle coin until 1933. The image of Liberty with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left has been enhanced for the Type 2 release to bring the visuals on the torch, stars, sun rays, and the U.S. Capitol Building in better alignment with Saint-Gaudens’ original design.
A new American bald eagle is depicted in the reverse of the 2021 1 oz Gold Eagles. The new design from Jennie Norris was chosen from more than 30 possible designs to represent the bald eagle on the reverse of the coin. This left-profile image shows the eagle with an incredible level of detail in its plumage and physical features.
