Gold American Eagle coins from the US Mint were the first gold coins issued by the US Mint following the 1933 halt in US gold coinage. Though not released for circulation like those coins prior to 1933, the Gold Eagle’s launch marked a restart of gold coining in the US after 53 years and the Gold Eagle is the purest US gold coin issued since 1834. Each Gold American Eagle has 22-karat gold content, or 91.67% gold, with a balance of 5.33% copper and 3% silver.
All 2021 1 oz Gold American Eagles listed here come with a perfect certification. The NGC issues a Mint State 70 certification to coins that have full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind. The included Early Release designation indicates the timing of arrival for the coin’s certification. To qualify, coins must arrive at the NGC within 30 days of the initial release date from the US Mint.
On the obverse of 2021 Gold American Eagles is the historic vision of Lady Liberty from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The design was developed in 1907 by Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt and featured on the Gold $20 Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933. The depiction shows Liberty in front-facing relief with a large torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
The reverse face of the 2021 1 oz Gold Eagle comes with a design from Miley Busiek. Created in 1986, it depicts a family of bald eagles around the nest. The female eagle is shown guarding a hatchling in the nest as a male eagle flies overhead.
