Ever since its debut in 1986, the Gold Eagle has featured the same obverse and reverse design elements. Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 depiction of Liberty from the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin has long been, and will continue to be, the obverse design on the coins. An exclusive design of a family of American bald eagles was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek for use in this series.
In 2021, the US Mint will change the reverse design to a new image of the American bald eagle that captures the natural beauty and power of the bird with a left-profile portrait of its head that bears life-like details. However, the US Mint will first release the original design combinations in 2021, with the new reverse coming by mid-2021 when the dies are ready for striking with the new imagery.
The obverse of 2021 1 oz Gold American Eagles depicts Lady Liberty. This historic design was on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933. It features Liberty’s full figure in front-facing relief with her hair blowing in the breeze and a free-flowing robe as she walks toward the viewer. She holds up a torch in her right hand to light the way and clutches an olive branch in the other hand.
On the reverse field of the 2021 Gold American Eagle is a design with several American bald eagles. In this work of art from Miley Busiek, a male eagle flies over a nest that holds a female eagle and hatchling within.
These 2021 1 oz Gold American Eagles have Mint State 70 certifications. The PCGS issues this grade to coins that showcase full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws. First Strike specimens are those the PCGS received for certification from the US Mint within 30 days of the initial release date.
